Reading the WallDynamic movement

Jump start

V3+

You start with a standing jump from the mat to the start holds, then bring your feet onto the wall.

Grade Shorter climbers meet it from V2–V3: “where tall people can reach, short people often have to jump” [106]. Four-point starts can force one at V4–V5 [221]. The placement is judgement.

How to do it

  1. Stand under the holds, feet hip-width apart. Keep your hips slightly behind your feet.
  2. Sink into a quarter squat. Swing your arms down and back.
  3. Jump straight up with your arms swinging up. Aim just above the holds.
  4. Catch with slightly bent arms. Pull your shoulder blades down [230].
  5. Use the swing to bring your feet onto the marked footholds [93].
  6. On a four-point start, get each hand and foot on its start hold. Keep still before the first move [221].

Common mistakes

  • Jumping towards the wall instead of straight up. You hit the wall and bounce off.
  • Landing stiff-legged from a missed start. Bend your knees and roll back (Chapter 9).
